How did your reaction to COVID-19 change between then and the first case in your town? Question 1 I first heard of Covid 19 at the beginning of 2020 and began feeling the impacts on March 10th 2020 How is your life different now than it was before the pandemic? Question 2 Before the pandemic I was suffering from depression, Anxiety and other (un-diagnosed) mental heath conditions. I had friends, but wasn't close with many of them and my family situation was very poor. After covid-19 began i was able to take time alone to work on my self and was able to drastically improve my mental health. My friendships took a toll at the beginning of the pandemic, however I gained newer stronger friendships while bettering old ones. My family situation while improving only a little is now on the mend. I am happy to say (in a sick kinda way) that the pandemic was actually a good thing for my life, even though i am well aware that many others have suffered horribly during this time. How are you feeling? What are you doing to relieve stress? Question 3 At this exact moment I am a little stressed and tired, however in general I am satisfied, growing, thankful and hopeful about the future. Before the pandemic I had horrendous coping methods. Now-er days I relive stress by listening to 'good' music, talking to friends, talking walks, doing yoga, going to the gym and sometimes simply crying it out because it is ok to feel the stress. In my opinion it isn't always about 'coping', but also about working through the emotion and reaching out --as i often try to do--when help is needed. What have you noticed has changed in your community since the outbreak? What has surprised you? Question 4 Nothing has really surprised me during the Pandemic, not that there haven't been a lot of socking happenings over the last 2 years, but nothing has been so 'crazy' considering the state of affaires. In my community at the start of things there were crazy long lockdowns, a wealth of restrictions and a self evident amount of panic among the general public. As restrictions reduced, schools and shops re-opened and things returned to normal, in some sense of the word, the greatest changes have been: online school, mask waring, social distancing and hand sanitizers posted outside of ever store. Are you a business owner who has had to close? If you are still open, how have you had to adjust how your business operates? Question 5 I am not a business owner, but I have talked to a few. Many of them expressed that they have either gone out of business for good, or that there is a severe decrease demand for their products especially those requiring close contact. Are you an essential employee? What do you do? What precautions are being taken at your workplace? What precautions are implementing at home? Question 6 I am not an essential worker however, the essential workers in my circle have been : following social distance rules, double masking, practicing good hygiene, getting vaccinated and being tested for covid weekly. Are you an employee who has been laid off or furloughed? Were you able to get unemployment? Were you able to retain your health insurance? Question 7 Not an employee. Are you working from home? What adjustments or challenges are you experiencing? Question 8 Technically I am working from home, as a student. In addition my parents have been working form home and we all experience: the typical tech and wi-fi issues, being 'on top' of each other, feeling burnt out or unmotivated, a lack of space and quiet to work in, an emotional disconnect between our selves and our peers/colleges. working form home can be seriously demotivating and family members often 'buck heads'. Being at home also means that schedules are either completely free or entirely 'jam-packed'. Do you have children at home? How’s it going? Question 9 Yes, apart from me there are several younger children. Most days are a little rocky because they have to be instructed and 'bossed' about in-order to attempt to bring structure to their day. In addition they essentially have to be homeschooled which is a full time job. And to make the stress level real, they [the children's] emotional needs have tripled due to a lack of social interactions. Overall it's manageable, but it certainly is not ideal....none of this is. If you’re a student, was school canceled? Were you able to complete your studies online? Do you think you’ll be back on campus in the fall? Question 10 I am a student and school was canceled. when school was first canceled around mid-March there was obviously not easy solution. None the less my school moved online after a few weeks and I was able to complete my last few months of school online. Over summer 2020 I changed school and despite hoping to be in-person, I have spent this last school year completely online. Hopefully if a few things sort themselves out I will be online this fall. How are you using social media, the Internet, or digital platforms during the pandemic? Question 11 At the start of the pandemic I had multiple forms of social media, currently I have narrowed my social media to just three apps (none of which i actually post on). I use Pintrerest for inspiration, Snap chat for reaching out to friends and youtube mainly for school or finding at home workouts. Did you have to postpone any major life events? (e.g. Graduation, wedding, major birthday) What did you do instead? Question 12 The most major event I have had to postpone is moving. There is so many documents and forms to fill, and covid keeps pushing our deadlines for certain things back. It feels like every time I get close to moving something covid-related causes the whole thing to fall through. Do you have animals? Did you adopt a pet? How have they impacted your day? Question 13 At the very start of the pandemic my family had 1 cat and 2 guinea pigs, one of which has now sadly passed. Any way, my family adopted 2 kittens, who recently turned one, and so far things have been great with all my pets. For the first 8 months of having our new kittens one of them got very sick with a STAF infection. This has been an issues that has reoccured once since but we have been seeking treatment for him. During covid this was very challenging because vets and medication was not always available. On a day to day basis having the pets (3 cats, 1 guinea pig) has been great! They are a great indication of when I am not doing well because their litter boxes and food gets neglected; subsequently this means i also have to get out of my rut in order to care for them (a good thing in my opinion). The pets are also very comforting and a wonderful way to pass my time playing with them ect. I am so thankful I am able to have all these pets and I am thankful for the positivity they have brought to my life. What positive things did you contribute to or notice take place? Question 14 During a pandemic positivity is becoming increasingly difficult to find. But at school I have been an active member of the community and have participated in global Round Square meetings. Did you or someone you know contract COVID-19? What was it like? Question 15 No one I know personally has contracted covid, but a few students at my school have. It was scary to think that they had a virus that could kill them, but I was also great to see how they handled it like champs. They got tested, treated, stayed home and kept themselves informed. If you lost someone during the pandemic, how did you celebrate their lives? Question 16 I am VERY thankful to not have lost anyone (apart form a pet) during the pandemic. What do you wish you knew before the pandemic began? Question 17 I wish I new how long it would last. I think having an Idea of how many weeks, months and years this whole thing would last would help me be more prepped. Knowing the time-frame for the pandemic, though very unrealistic, would allow me to plan my future in a more realistic way. What would you want future generations to know about the 2020 pandemic? How would you recommend they prepare for it? Question 18 The pandemic was one of the single most unplanned and unfortunate events of the early 2020s. However it was also a time of change, togetherness, triumph and a test of human ingenuity. So, even though millions lost their lives, jobs, homes and food; many of us still lived and thrived to share this story of how an invisible virus took down the world and how we as a human race worked to gain it back. How do you think this pandemic will change how we behave going forward? What will the “new normal” look like? Question 19 The 'new normal', to me, looks like a hybrid of covid-times and pre-covid-times. Online resources, online shopping ect will forever be more popular then in-person activities. School and work (especially) will take on a hybrid model, utilize online forums like Zoom more often and find working/learning from home more acceptable. Social activities will mean so much more, but so will online relationships. The world will find this new normal where we don't accept certain behaviors and where we now more than ever accept other behaviors. The world is going to do a complete 180. How did your reaction to COVID-19 change between then and the first case in your town? Question 1 When the library where I work had to close because of the risks caused by the virus, mid-March 2020, that was when the impact first hit me. Finding out about the first case in my town heightened my fears immensely. How is your life different now than it was before the pandemic? Question 2 I always wear a mask now. I fear for the life of myself and my loved ones; I'm scared to go to malls and events and to go sit and eat at a restaurant. Not just because of the virus itself, but because of the anti-Asian sentiment that is growing in the United States and around the world. I fear that people will unjustly blame my mother and/or myself for the virus. I fear there are people who will want to do us harm because we are Asian and they blame Asians for the existence of COVID-19. How are you feeling? What are you doing to relieve stress? Question 3 I am sad and frustrated at people who refuse to follow common sense and wear masks. People who don't respect social distancing rules or who otherwise go about blatantly ignoring those who are at more risk than they of dying from COVID-19, people who even deny the existence of the virus - these people cause me so much anger. To relieve stress, I try to journal or listen to my favorite music. I communicate with online communities with like-minded individuals who share my thoughts about COVID-19, but who will also challenge me to think critically so my beliefs won't swirl around in an echo chamber. I get comfort from being around intelligent people. What have you noticed has changed in your community since the outbreak? What has surprised you? Question 4 I think some people have become more understanding of those who had "less than" before the pandemic started. They know how frustrating it is to not be able to go out shopping or eating at a restaurant because of financial impacts. I'm surprised at how few people I've encountered through my job who refuse to wear masks. I'm sadly *not* surprised at how many people still wear them incorrectly, however. Are you an employee who has been laid off or furloughed? Were you able to get unemployment? Were you able to retain your health insurance? Question 7 I'm not considered an "essential employee", but I work at a library where I have to face the public every day. Everyone who enters the building must use hand sanitizer when they enter and when they leave. If they use a computer, they are responsible for sanitizing the area after they are done. Staff cleans shared surfaces frequently. Everyone must wear masks and social distance. I'm making sure that at the very least when I come home from work, I change my clothes, wash my hands, and sanitize my phone and watch. How are you using social media, the Internet, or digital platforms during the pandemic? Question 11 I am using social media, the Internet, and digital platforms to stay connected to friends and like-minded individuals. This is the only social interaction besides work that I allow myself as it is much safer than meeting people in person right now. I try to avoid the news as much as possible unless I'm looking for specific information because seeing the frankly dumb things people have done during the pandemic is frustrating, upsetting, and depressing. Did you have to postpone any major life events? (e.g. Graduation, wedding, major birthday) What did you do instead? Question 12 The birthdays of myself and both parents happened during quarantine. For myself, at least, I was planning on meeting with friends and having a party - something that as an introvert I wouldn't normally do. I had planned for 2020 to be the year that I would be more outgoing and try new things, maybe travel and eat new foods and meet new people. But for obvious reasons, I was not able to do any of this. We celebrated birthdays at home, but luckily we were able to get curbside takeout food. Do you have animals? Did you adopt a pet? How have they impacted your day? Question 13 I own a bird. Seeing their "personality" and silly antics brings a smile to my face. Did you or someone you know contract COVID-19? What was it like? Question 15 People I'm friends with online had been diagnosed with COVID-19. I was scared for them and their families because I knew they were suffering from the effects of the virus. I was scared they might die. What do you wish you knew before the pandemic began? Question 17 I wish I knew just how foolish people would be - I wish I had known that people would refuse to wear masks and social distance. If they had followed rules and common sense, the pandemic would have been over in a matter of a few months instead of extending into a year or more. What would you want future generations to know about the 2020 pandemic? How would you recommend they prepare for it? Question 18 I want future generations to know that people will play politics with their health and safety. I would recommend that even if family or friends don't take precautions to guard against the virus, that they themselves should still do their best to ensure their own safety and those of the people around them. Also, don't hoard toilet paper or any other essential supplies. Take only as much as you need and save the rest for people who truly need it the most. Be prepared to confront loved ones who don't take the risk of COVID-19 seriously. How do you think this pandemic will change how we behave going forward? What will the “new normal” look like? Question 19 I think the "new normal" will include wearing masks all the time, not just for the benefit of reducing the transmission of germs, but also to protect against allergens and pollution. I feel that some people will have learned important lessons about themselves and what they want out of life, for having been in quarantine/lockdown/having to endure restrictions has given them time to contemplate such things. Question 1 I first heard about Covid in December of 2019 and initially thought it would be like Ebola or Swine Flu were it would be localized in poorer regions that could not afford proper healthcare. It wasn't until February 2020 where I saw the global ramifications of COVID-19. How is your life different now than it was before the pandemic? Question 2 It has hit me hard financially. I perform at local restaurants and with COVID-19 shutting places down and the restrictions that came soon after. I lost a substantial amount of income and that put a lot of pressure on me to skimp on medical treatments, food and other areas just to pay the bills. Life is still hard now even as restrictions are slowly being lifted How are you feeling? What are you doing to relieve stress? Question 3 During the winter, things were very difficult with some COVID-19 scares and precautionary quarantining even during the holidays. Although we had a Christmas miracle when my father who was quarantining as a precaution was told he was cleared and what looked to be a lonely Christmas became a family Christmas again. As the snow melts and things get warmer, walking and hiking have been my main way to relieve stress along with music and reading. What have you noticed has changed in your community since the outbreak? What has surprised you? Question 4 With the lack of bars, I have noticed a dramatic dip in seeing people I would see almost everyday at the pub. What has surprised me is the amount of people who have taken the time to revaluate their lives and change for the better now that they had the time to really work at it while things were shut down. It will be interesting if this trend continues as we continue to lift restrictions. Are you a business owner who has had to close? Although listenership is at an all-time high, people don't have the money to spend on ads and merchandise to help support the station. I have mostly had to rely on contracts to keep afloat. Question 2 I don’t talk to people as often, I go on the internet a lot more and I’m paying a lot more attention to politics. How are you feeling? What are you doing to relieve stress? Question 3 Stressed and worried for the state of our country and our democracy. I listen to music and take walks. I also like to watch comfort streamers. What have you noticed has changed in your community since the outbreak? What has surprised you? Question 4 There are so many more people than I thought that just decide to ignore science. There are so many people in my community who just believe that this isn’t a problem. If you’re a student, was school canceled? Were you able to complete your studies online? Do you think you’ll be back on campus in the fall? Question 10 In March school was canceled and we went entirely virtual. I did all my work and I did well until the end of the year but I know many of my classmates did not. We went back to school full in person unlike a lot of other schools and even with the recent rise in cases we have only had to go online for two weeks once. Question 11 I am using it to learn so much more about our world and became radicalized politically through social media. I use it to talk with like minded people and debate those who want to debate. Question 12 I was on quarantine when my uncle’s wedding happened so we had to watch it virtually and I was really sad about that. How did your reaction to COVID-19 change between then and the first case in your town? Question 1 Heard about the first cases in China in winter, 2019. By February, 2020, we were in local "lockdown". How is your life different now than it was before the pandemic? Question 2 There isn't an aspect of daily life it hasn't changed, from interacting with others, to getting basics like food and medicine, and in Saratoga Springs - a 'destination location' where people travel to globally for the summer and the races - the normally busy summer season is vastly changed. All entertainment venues are closed - Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Caffe Lena, all local indoor theaters - and the racetrack is running races MINUS spectators. People can bet on the races online, but cannot attend in person. Restaurants and bars, if open, generally are only for dining outdoors - and some streets are partially closed to allow them to use the sidewalks and even parts of the street to set up dining outdoors. How are you feeling? What are you doing to relieve stress? Question 3 The longer the virus continues to spread without an effective treatment, the more of a toll it seems to be taking on everyone, including friends and neighbors as we pass a full half year without any true health fixes for the problem (outside of avoiding all contact with others - which isn't a viable option for anyone!) I went to the concert broadcast live by a group of friends from Caffe Lena last week - I was one of four (masked and distanced) people there other than the musicians and those broadcasting the concert. Live music was SO strange (and good!) to hear for the first time since winter - and I wondered how many others had not heard live music since then, either... Are you a business owner who has had to close? If you are still open, how have you had to adjust how your business operates? Question 5 I work from home, so fortunately did not have a storefront to close, but the store where I sell my painted pieces only reopened this summer; many for limited hours and most with far fewer customers than normally busy vacation/track season. Question 12 All major parties and friends' events were postponed; sometimes they became a small, properly masked and distanced gathering in a yard or on a porch. I went to one birthday where I could see people were not masked and there were more than permitted sitting too close together. I left before anyone could see me due to the lack of responsible safety! Do you have animals? Did you adopt a pet? How have they impacted your day? Question 13 I have been trying to adopt a specific breed of (adult) dog, so I could be sure it was quiet as I live in a subdivided old home and need to know in advance it's not a noisy dog. The rescue I have adopted from in the past is closed due to interstate transport and quarantine safety issues. :( What positive things did you contribute to or notice take place? Question 14 I have been doing more community artwork - and also encouraging people to be more forgiving of each other in social media exchanges. We don't need added stress in an already difficult time! But in my immediate neighborhood, people do seem to be more supportive and giving than usual. Did you or someone you know contract COVID-19? Question 17 Wish we knew how to convince the Trump administration and its Republican senate to take this lethal - and still incurable - virus seriously instead of calling it "a hoax" and telling trusting Americans that it would "disappear," while casting aspersions on the medical doctors and scientists who were trying, early on, to raise appropriate alarms and get the administration to act in the best interests of the American people. Because science and medicine were ignored, the United States is as divided now as at any time since the Civil War - and we have the highest virus infection AND death rate in the WORLD, with all the harm to families, jobs, communities and our entire way of life that upending an entire economy and social system entails. What would you want future generations to know about the 2020 pandemic? How would you recommend they prepare for it? Question 18 Education is key. Children need to be taught to value and trust PROVEN FACTS above rumors and propaganda - and how to effectively tell one from the other so that they can both understand and share that proven knowledge with others. That way, if a leader tells them one thing while science clearly shows them another - like U.S. President Trump asserting that a proven lethal pandemic is "a hoax" and will "disappear" when science shows it is killing increasing numbers of people across the globe on a daily basis - they will have the education and skills to dismiss and ignore such harmful propaganda, and have methods and media in place to assure that correct, fact-based information is distributed to (and believed by) all. That way, the safest approach to whatever threat can be speedily enacted, and the brightest minds of their time can be put to use to solve the problem quickly and permanently. Funds and equipment should be set aside and protocols created in advance so that when the next critical national or international health challenge appears, the country need only enact the proper health and safety protocols the minute the problem is declared an epidemic, if not sooner! How do you think this pandemic will change how we behave going forward? What will the “new normal” look like? Question 19 Sadly, at present, it seems that the misinformation continuously provided by President Trump and his administration on everything from the severity of the virus and its likely duration to dismissing for months its ONLY proven prevention method (universal mask wearing, distancing and thorough sanitary washing) and his continuing refusal to mandate those methods for the U.S. public nationwide has led to a mistrust of science, medical practice and even of fact-based and researched journalism that may take decades or longer for the U.S. to recover from - if at all. The "new normal" created as a result are families, friends and neighbors who don't speak with each other depending on whether they accept or deny scientific fact; the thousands of people who died - on track to to be more than were killed in America's World Wars - all because the country did not adopt a uniform medical plan or response to the virus, making the U.S. the global leader in COVID-19 infections and deaths - and a resulting loss of American homes, jobs and fundamental security for all but the wealthiest citizens (who became even wealthier as the rest lost both income sources, savings and more). All of this points to a "new normal" which is likely to be far more difficult for most Americans than any of us yet know. And I'm writing this while our "Capital Region" area is being described as one of the virus "hot spots" in New York State where we (unlike New York City, which saw first-hand its hospitals overwhelmed and bodies needing to be placed in refrigerated trucks in hospital parking lots because storage areas inside the hospitals were full) did not have an early high death/infection rate to frighten the necessary majority into adopting safe public health precautions. So we have a local virus infection rate here which is still GROWING - with no reliable medical treatment yet available - and a vaccine which is only still in the development phases. So it seems far too early to wonder what the "new normal" truly will look like, when it appears we're still very much in the throes of the old nightmare. (I write this as today's used cloth masks are having their nightly soak in their very hot, soapy water, soon to join yesterday's hanging to dry before they are used once again for any public outing...) How did your reaction to COVID-19 change between then and the first case in your town? Question 1 A close friend of mine living in Korea was diagnosed on March 7. I realized then that this really happens to anybody, and I immediately started to become more cautious, even though there weren't many cases here yet. Once we had enough cases here to close school, I really became cautious about who I was around, what I touched, etc. How is your life different now than it was before the pandemic? Question 2 I haven't met up with any friends in over 2 months, I wear a mask everytime I leave my house, I wear gloves when going to grocery stores, and I limit leaving to go shopping to 1 or 2 times a week. I've been biking much more often and I've used my extra free time to learn the piano and guitar. How are you feeling? What are you doing to relieve stress? Question 3 I'm feeling alright, though I wish I could have face to face contact with some friends. I miss a lot of people dearly, and we don't have the capacity to do video calls. In terms of stress management, I take frequent breaks to keep my mind on something else. I write, read, and play video games to keep myself occupied. Afterwards I will continue what I had been doing, if there was something. What have you noticed has changed in your community since the outbreak? What has surprised you? Question 4 Many businesses, organizations, and stores have reduced their hours or closed for in store activities. School is no longer in session on campus, which has sincerely affected me. Everyday they take their own temperatures 3x in a shift, they're required to wear gloves and masks, and they must keep their residents apart. No visitors are allowed either. When she's home, she keeps her scrubs in a bag rather than her laundry basket until laundry day to keep those "outside germs" separate. Are you an employee who has been laid off or furloughed? All classes are required participation online, with the grades changed to either EOL or NYL. It's difficult at times to complete assignments due to internet connections, but I manage to work on my work. I believe that school will return for next year, or some sort of structured schedule for our classes to continue. Question 13 We have 2 cats, 2 birds, and a snake. None of our pets have been affected, other than receiving more attention now that we're all home.
